It doesn't seem that long ago since I was last talking about Broadclyst Theatre Group on here. Fresh from bringing the curtain down on Aladdin, which proved to be a hit with local audiences, they're now back with a brace of one-act plays which will send you bouncing into this spring with a big smile on your face.
As with two years ago, both the one-act plays being offered up for your delictation are comedies - but in terms of their subject matter, they couldn't be more different. Intensive Care is a comedic thriller set in a hospital ward, in which our protagonist George enters for a routine, minor operation only to find that little is what it seems. Final Whistle, by contrast, is a football story about how one man's love of the so-called beautiful game (not my sport of choice) is challenged by the arrival of a new flatmate.
I was involved in Two Fat Men with Broadclyst a couple of years ago, under the careful guidance of Katie Jones, who is helming both of these plays. Knowing her methods of direction as I do, I can safely say that you're in for a really good night. The group's one-act offerings are always interesting choices, and Katie is always keen to get the most out of characters by harnessing the foibles and range of the actors in question. In short, if you're expecting a creaky, hastily-assembled ordeal, prepare to have those expectations shaken and shattered.
