Filmstock: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Back in September, I posted about the Filmstock screening of David Lynch's Wild at Heart; you can read my original post here. Now, two months later, we come to the next such screening - and what better way that to mark the Hallowe'en season than The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I've just completed a show on Phonic FM in which I gave my recommendations for Hallowe'en viewing; to find them either go to my Twitter feed (@mumbyatmovies) or the Daniel Mumby on Phonic FM Facebook page (here). I didn't include Rocky Horror on that list, for several reasons, but for pure enjoyment around Hallowe'en there are few better examples, nor many better examples of what constitutes a cult classic.

For the uninitiated, Rocky Horror is the story of Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon), "two young, ordinary, healthy kids". Having just got engaged, they go to visit their old science teacher Dr. Everett Scott (Jonathan Adams) to tell him the good news. After getting a flat tyre in a terrible storm (much like the recent one), they take shelter in a strange and creepy castle, stumbling on the alien transvestite Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry) and his nefarious plans. In the words of the narrator, played by Charles Gray, "it was a night out they were going to remember... for a very long time..."
Like Wild at Heart, Rocky Horror is a fantastic experience on the big screen, accompanied in this case by dressing up as the characters and talking back to the film. I'm not going to claim that it's a perfect film, but like all the best cult movies its flaws are part of what makes it so vividly memorable. In any case, whether you come for the songs, the screams or the Sweet Transvestite, you are in for a treat. If you've never seen Rocky Horror before, then this is your perfect chance to, in the words of the film, "give yourself over to absolute pleasure".
Rocky Horror will be showing in Culmstock Village Hall on Saturday November 2nd. Doors open at 7pm and the screening is due to start at 8pm - costume is encouraged but not compulsory. Tickets are on sale in the Strand Stores in Culmstock, or are available on the door at £5 each.  See the Facebook event here for more details. If you want a more in-depth idea of what to expect, you can read my review of the film here, listen to The Movie Hour podcast here or check out the official fan club trailer below:

P.S. Richard O'Brien, who plays Riff Raff and wrote the songs, also hosted The Crystal Maze. The man has talent.
