Dumbshow: The Pearl

I've posted on several occasions about Dumbshow Theatre Company, expressing my love and admiration for their work in general and for Clockheart Boy in particular. Today, however, I'd like to talk about their new show, The Pearl, and the many opportunities you'll have to see it.

The Pearl is based on John Steinbeck's 1947 novel of the same name. It follows impoverished pearl-diver Kino, who finds an enormous pearl that he believes will transform his fortunes. At first all seems well, as he marries his sweetheart Joanna and they have a son. But other men also desire the pearl, and soon the very thing which brought him so much hope has led Kito down a dark path, ending in indifference and despair...

The Pearl continues Dumbshow's interest in fables and the weighty potential of fairy tales. The show previewed in its initial stage at the International Youth Arts Festival in London last year, attracting some really good reviews. Dumbshow have always had a knack for continually developing and improving their shows as they tour them - so if the trailer below is anything to go by, it's going to be pretty damned amazing.

As things stand there are two ways in which you can see the show:

1. There are two previews at the Rose Theatre in Kingston-upon-Thames on Friday 28th June, at 10:30am and 7:30pm. Tickets are £10 for adults and £8 for concessions, and can be purchased here.

2. Dumbshow are taking the show to this year's Edinburgh Festival (just like Kill the Beast). The company will be at the Pleasance Courtyard from Wednesday 31st July to Monday August 26th, with daily performances at 12:30pm. Tickets to all shows can be purchased here.

I'll be trying to catch the show in London if I can. Hope to see you there!

P. S. I'll be doing another post this month, in which I'll be previewing a few more Edinburgh attractions - watch this space.
